I use Shell Full Synthetic (can't find any semi-syn).
Have done 20,000km, and the gear shifting is the only thing I can say the rider notices any difference with, -for the better. That first gear 'clunk' from neutral isn't as loud either.
I do think the clutch noise is louder, but you really have to listen to notice the difference. On balance, I hear more good things than bad about Syn oil and the 'good things' tend to be backed up with research or experiential evidence.
Although, I change the oil once a month (about what the manual says at 6600km), I think you can get away with longer periods between oil changes too. I once left it in for 10,500kms (don't ask), and the gear changes were still sweet. Dirty as hell, though. Dirty becomes an issue long before viscosity lost.
The only other advice I was given, was to stick with what ever oil you choose, and not to switch around all the time.
