Thats just it Paul, unless there is someone following close behind, you are required to stop at an orange light, not accelerate to get through it.
Even if you are doing under the speed limit. I suspect that the cop saw that you accelerated instead of preparing to stop, which is almost the equivalent of running a red light.
You are quite correct to carry on through an orange light if you are in danger of being rear ended but otherwise you are required to stop.
