New Forum - The Final Word
#18
ok - was going to just stay out of it - however there are some valid points here so I'll answer them best I can.

Firstly - with the test forum everyone has the same default password - either way - if we move myself & DJ would have to reimport anyway before the cut over - so you can log in using your old user name. So you can really do anything you want with the test forum - default password is haya13 for all user names.

Also before I go on - with the move I think myself & dj would expect the current people to look after it as we will tech them how - but also this is a passion of mine - IT & Computers & even tho its my work - for the club I am willing to do this - I do it for my gaming guilds & other hobbies I am in to. (Also I love doing migrations IT wise from one system to another - most of my job is working out how to do that)

Now to just answer & explain somethings.....

Quote:The current board has been operational for quite some years now. It certainly aint the best or the fanciest but does the job and is by now well known and linked elsewhere in many places.

Links - links are controlled by a thing called DNS (Dynamic Naming Server) What it does is turn a computer network address (Numeric ie: 192.168.1.50) to a name - so www.hayabusaclub.com.au can really mean 203.160.20.80 on a computer network - with the change over I can request that the internet naming servers change the numeric address to what ever server we are going to use - thus all links will not "break" but point back to the servers we are using - this means links & www names we can keep if we want & have them point to new servers - thus any concers with links are gone.

Cost:
This has been covered pretty well - DJ & Myself have made sure the bandwidth will be there - the 70 bucks a year does cover it - over time the cost of running forums & websites has dropped alot. With the new forums (While its not done yet) we can make up our own welcome page as well - people that want adverts on the club can have them - we can do all of this because it would be under our control. So its cheaper & easier.

Technical:
on the ezboard VS PhP & other forums - Many companys, online clubs & gaming guilds have all moved away from the likes of fully hosted systems. Reasons for this including owner ship of the data, control of it, cost & recovering. A major part of my work is DR (disaster recovery) for major company systems that are worth millions & millions. have a look at the first post made by rocket when ezboard crashed out:
Quote:Ok ,ive started this thread again as i cannot reply in the other one as the board is f****d.I will be there tonight to personally present DJ with his award. Now bend over Pete and ill show you where it goes

The way PhP works means the backups are automated & emails sent to those who look after it to make sure they happen - the recovery is something that many of us in the club can do & help with - & from anywhere in the world - we dont have to be here in Melbourne.

But Its Not Broken???

Well - while the simple posting functions may work here - we can not run a calender for our rides, from the forum here you can't do en-mass post deletes, edits or mails outs for detail updates. Its hard to track our members, if someone posted something helpful about the busa in the last week or two - you MIGHT find it - with the new one its EASY to search & find infomation, To find your way around the forum, post topics, add pictures, links - all more easy.

Universal:
??? ok WTF? here it is - the new forums data is kept in a universal format - its called SQL & its used by all sorts of software - Microsoft & many others. Because its used so widely & not just on the net but in companys as well - its easy to find people to work on it & its EASY to learn as well!! This means if we move never again will the club have to worry about losing ANY data - all the topics with info on how to do set mods, how to fix set problems, tips, tyres chat, pictures of our lost loves, pictures & memorys of trips together & people we have met - all of it safe & not at the mercy of ezboard!

I am not trying to sell it - I am just trying to help some understand where we are coming from. While the forum here may not look broken - there are somethings that just would make it a hell of a lot better.

Also think about this - how does it look to someone new? I know of someone recently that joined who had to ask me how to post??? It looks old & out dated. With the new one we can refresh it all our selfs, make it look as good as we want & provide different looks for everyone to choose suited to their mood.

So have a think about it more after reading this - if you have questions email me @ Christian.Wilke@avivagroup.com.au or razz0r@internode.on.net "Busa riders always count in three's.... 100, 200, 300"
