Well done Raz and DJ.. Its good to see that a couple of guys are willing to give it a go to see where it leads.
Personally I wouldnt be talking 10 to 20 years. Those numbers have come up a couple of times, not just in these sets of posts. Anyone in the industry knows how fast things move. People outside of the industry wonder how we can work on one thing forever.. I can tell you that we have spent 5 years with 10 developers (not including other IT staff) changing the software in our business, everyday there is something new to do. We consider PC's chuck out items every 3 years because of the change of hardware and software needs.. If your next forum lasts 5 years without a change, that is long term.
The current forum in regards to functionality doesnt bother me. Have had lots of experiance giving people new funk ways of doing things which most times they use 20% of because they dont understand.. in our secure site we used tabs and our clients didnt understand that they can click on them to change pages..
Regardless of how long the site has been here, or how long it has been here or the functionality provided (you can type in topics and text and stick in some pictures, what more do you need).. the thing that is lacking is data security.. In our business if an IT persons forgets a backup of data, or the hardware isnt working and someone doesnt make more than enough effort to fix it, they are dismissed on the spot.. The forum may not contain financial tax data or anything, but it is precious to some... The key first should be the data security.. If that is fine.. i.e everything is backed up nightly, then why change.. if its not, then that would be good enough reason for me to change forums or hosts regardless of other functionality.
If we dont have data security then its time to change.. If we do, leave it alone.
Thats my long 2 cents.
