Bill,
I've not been up to Matthews Creek but if you go to Coramba and can get past the great pub, (Russell Crowe's local), You can go up the mountain via a very twisty sealed road to a small town called LOWANA, (Jack Thompson lives here).
There are patches of dirt road around the Dorrigo mountain so you need to be careful. The road to Lowana is great but needs careful attention. There are a couple of reverse cambers along the way and sometimes there is water across the road after rain for a couple of days.
I suggest you try the Namboida road from Grafton up to Ebor and Armidale if you want some wonderful busa riding country.
But make sure to visit the Coramba hotel if in that vicinity.
