Just to avoid the confusion - Pan is asking about DVDs here not CDs.
BUT the reason for the + or - or +- is the type of laser format that the device uses to perform the burn.
A CDR+ will not burn CDR- disks and so on.
Most of the more recent burners are universal and will burn both.
If you are new to burning, it is always best to use a slow speed burn until you prove that your hardware and software can cope with the faster speeds.
I suggest starting at about 16 speed and work up to faster if your devices are compatable.
