Heidi and Max argue about the Cronulla Riots ??? Oh boy... this I gotta hear. C'mon Heidi... fess up !
I have seen part of the coverage of what Peter Costello said and maybe I missed a bit, but he never actually pointed the finger at any racial or religious group. So how come I hear all this whining about it being a Muslim bash ? Did I miss some footage ? Was there a direct mention of Muslims or Arabs ? If not, then why doth everyone protest too much ??
I agreed with his comments (at least, the ones I heard), but not in relation to any particular religion or race. I think it should apply to everyone - and I don't think we're exempt just because we were born here. Yes, it is good to hear someone say it out loud. There will be an outcry and of course the media will try to be the national conscience and tell us all how outraged we are... even tho we aren't.
I think I'm gonna start a thread called "Media as the National Conscience". I'm getting tired of hearing from the evening news broadcaster that Australians are outraged by this... Australians think this way or that way.... Australians should do such-and-such - when in reality, when you talk to the man in the street, (or woman) its either a non-issue (example : AWB) or they think the opposite. If they took the sensationalism and bias out of the news, it might be worth watching. Then it would just be accurate information and we dummies could make our own decisions and judgements. What a novelty.
Oh crap... is there a soapbox icon ????
Anyway... back to the subject. I support anyone of any race and any religion who wants to live here, observe our laws, show respect to our culture and our values and integrate into our society. In return, I'll show respect to their culture and their values and I'll defend their rights to the same freedoms as anyone else. But in the end (as I said in an earlier post) our national charter states we are an english speaking, christian democracy - and these values are not negotiable.
Hey... two soapboxes... one post. What a waste ! The older I get, the better I was. Regards.... Rob (Astro)Edited by: AstroBusa at: 25/2/06 12:37 am
