You also need to consider tyre technology and dual compound rubber. harder compounds in the middlefor better wear, whilst still having softer compound on the edge for better grip. Best of both worlds really. I've never noticed a lack of grip of any of my dual compound Michelin tyres, including track days, and still getting great mileage.
