Hi straw man, you say you are a new long distance rider..Is this just on the 'busa or have you done miles on something else ? There are many factors to consider on a long ride.. Are you comfortable on the bike ? Have you prepared by having ample sleep for a few nights previously ? Have you had regular meals and fluids ? All sounds a little over the top but if you are in good physical and mental condition the ride will slip by.Not talking gym junkie just general well being.
The biggest plus is your bike, though some find the 'busa can be uncomfortable after 8/9 hours it is the most comfortable bike I have ridden in 40 plus years of riding on 30 plus bikes. 2 weeks ago another member and I rode to Armidale from Brisbane to meet some friends returning from a trip away for breakfast in Ebor. 1019km for the day and got off ready to go for another ride. As I said preparation is the key, if you are time restricted a straight run from Melbourne to Brisbane is easily doable if you prepare. I have done 3 trips to the island in one stint, then slept like a log.
Factors such as rain, temperature can also play a big part in a long ride, you don't want to be shivering with cold as you use up energy, and too much heat depletes it even faster. I try and leave about 2 hours before dawn, as this gives you quiet time to clear suburbia etc before you really hit the open road and generally don't spend too much time in roo country before the sun comes up giving you a fresh sense of wakefulness.Most sensible option is to aim for a prebooked bed somewhere in the vicinity of two thirds of your trip, I usually find a decent caravan park to be a good option. Hope this is of some help.. also not sure about you but I find it really difficult to sleep the night of a good ride so sleep well earlier...
