Morning all. The answer is Yes, there is a much better and modern way to do it.
I use a 3BR POWERSPORTS USB system. It's hard wired into the bike, fully waterproof usb2 power supply. Mine is mounted next to the front left reservoir, that's their recommendation for the gen2.
The kit comes at exact length and shows the mounting path through the right side of the frame etc.
I use it for my Garmin GPS, my iPhone and my GoPro.
