Hey JOCK,
A great ride if you've never done it before Jock, but you need to consider a bunch of things if your planning to go. These would consist of - many bikes do attend this event so be prepared for a mix of really great and friendly bunch of people 80%+ and then there is the other 20% of Super Hero's, Learner newbies, and ex moto GP riders...... and of course a LARGE number of fuzzies that go to boost the revenues of the local economy. I have done this ride a number of times. EVERY time I have been there have been crashes (small and large, and multiples of) and people going home "without a license" (hint hint). Would I recommend this ride YES but I would be very cautious of all of what I mentioned earlier if I was to go again... in saying this the roads are AWESOME... the riding is some of the best you'll find and you will enjoy your self quite abit. Conditions vary from very cold to quite warm.. so you'll need to go prepared for anything, and accommodation (pretty all accom is good) can run out fast so get in quick. What we tend to do now is go ride the same roads in a little more warmer conditions and with a lot less fuzzies running around.
Enjoy have fun and be safe.
