They do compensate for unauthorised access, but the trouble is was it their fault?
Did you only use your computer to log in? Do you save passwords? Do you clear your browser's private data (cookies, form history, flash history, browsing history, passwords) on exit? Do you have your password written or stored anywhere (even in email)? Do you use a smartphone to access those services? Did you have any friends or family assess your phone or computer? Or even be sure that someone else didn't use them? If you're using Windows, do you have a virus scanner, is it active, is it up to date? Do you have a firewall running, is it configured?
This is the tip of the iceberg. The above precautions would eliminate the bulk of security flaws. If someone really wanted to take advantage of you, there's always a way to do it, but it doesn't mean basic precautions shouldn't be in place.
BTW, this isn't a stab at you Rod, I'm just saying this sort of thing happens all the time because covering every hole in your system is a difficult task for someone who hasn't spent a long time working on it.
If you want a quick solution that doesn't require hard work, install TOR bundle. This provides exceptional anonymity for those that have no f***ing idea:
