It's worth seeing Leonard launch. His head is way far ahead (to put weight over the nose) and he lets his legs hang right back (his new bike even has footpegs for launching), possibly to put more weight over the rear tyre.
I tried it once that way and it felt good, easy to control, but then had to back off the throttle because I couldn't bring my leg forward enough to change gears without risking pulling on the handlebars too much/unevenly (risky because my front wheel was about 5 or 10cm off the ground).
Still, it baffles me why your bike seems to "slow down"...
