The biggest problem with "knobs" is that they concentrate the impact directly onto one point wheras with out them the impact is spread over a much larger broader area. The result is that a drop from a side stand they will maybe save your fairing but on a larger scale accident they will probably turn what would have been cosmetic damage into structural damage.
