New Batteries

Still got the original Simmo, mind you last winter, and believe me, Canberra gets quite cold, the starter was a little slow on mornings where the temperature hit below minus 4. At work the bike is out in the open. Once the sub-zero temperatures finished I stopped having slow starter problems. The original batteries have to be okay at that rate, have you picked up an electrical problem along the line that is manifesting itself in sucking the life out of your batteries perhaps??
