Mark, you have hit the nail in the head here
If the new spark plugs gave you more power or torque it does not mean that they are any better. It only means that you old ones were crap and weren't doing their job properly.
Addition of Irridium (expensive metal from platinum family) in electrodes increses ONLY their service life as it is extremally resistant to erosion caused by high voltage electric arcing. That is why they are more expensive and I would be aware of cheap ones as much as $100 diamonds.
