IMO the 500,000 more votes is over-rated. If it was that pronounced in real terms, the preferences wouldn't be giving labor such a big leg up. Both parties just argue to their strengths, but they're both just flogging spin.
It's more likely that the majority of those Greens votes are labor voters who would never vote Liberal, either voting strategical or giving Labor a reminder not to take them for granted - it's an option Liberal voters don't have too often. Change the system to one vote, no preferences and you'll get Labor and Liberals spiltting 90% of vote every election.
