I have a 2000 as well and figured I'd upgrade once the parts wear out. I'm reliably informed that if you keep your battery in good condition, you shouldn't have a problem - there are plenty of them out there not experiencing any kick back damage. Also, you'll avoid the kick back problem if when starting, you only release the key once the engine has fired.

More relevant to your post, you could get the parts off of a wrecked low mileage 2003+ bike.

I'm with you, Throwdown cross that bridge IF you come to it . Carbon Busa has a link to a mob in the USA who will supply as new used parts t6o do the complete job for about $700 USD ,so why sweat it. Keep your battery up to scratch & your fingers crossed & your ears peeled during start up. If it Doe's happen 700 buck's isn't that hard to find.& if it doesn't ,why waste 700 bucks .You feeling lucky ? I am .
