My '99 is doing the same thing and in the process of eliminating the problem. Done all the steps you've done and sent battery back a few times with them saying the battery is ok. Got this one a couple of weeks b4 the anniversary run but have had trouble since. Doing the same as the previous battery.
Our last ride out I had to jump start the bike at various stops on the ride where at other stops bike would start no prob's.
Andcad said he had the same problem with his Gen1 but said he threw his bike down the road b4 he could solve the problem.
For good batteries at a low price check out Challenge Batteries in Osborne Park. Though I got this battery through my brothers work. Was same as was in there previously.
