Sounds like you have the issue but for me when i have heard rattles which sound like it's coming from the front wheel it's been the chain. Easy to just hold the clutch in and see if the noise stops.

Gearbox sounds $$$'s. Cheaper to get one from a wrecker and clap it in than to rebuild?
