I have always ran a synthetic/mineral blend (in the Gen1) but I do change oil and filter every 5000km. Ran fully synthetic once when I crossed the continent then went back the the blend mix. I also run standard plugs ($5 - $6each) and these get changed every 5000km also. 150,000km's on and I still have a very strong engine that has had NOTHING done to it. Total cost is a little over $100 and a couple of hours of my time.
Agreed that a new bike has warranty issues etc etc.
