Riding Boots - any bad ones?

This is going to sound really daft but what sort of socks do you find best? Long thinnish Footy socks (and by footy I mean League, not that nancy boy AFL), shorter but thicker Hard Yaka type socks for work boots or anything else? I'm just trying to think of what would be best for comfort, breathing etc in these big boots.
