I'm just putting together my next trip, and I think I'll do a bit more sleeping on the side of the road (it was one of the highlights of the loop).
I've just found my ultimate swag, it zips right around so you are a bit like a sausage roll with eyes, but wriggly things can't climb in with you. It has a small frame at both ends for airflow. The downsides are it weighs 7kgs (more once you add bedding) and is about 75cms long when rolled up, so will stick a considerable distance out both sides of the bike.
My other option is a small pup tent (which folds down to nothing) and a bed roll which I can keep considerably smaller for the bike. The other positive to the tent is that I can pull my gear in with me and nothing will take up residence in my boots. The downside is that you are not sleeping in a swag under the stars in the middle of absolutely nowhere.
Does anyone have experience or suggestions?
