I hear you Tom, but I have to say I've been suprised with mine. When I changed from Telstra & was expecting some coverage issues. To date I've had none.
The TPG mob acc is via SOUL which is part of the OPTUS network.
I regularly travel between Brisbane, Sydney & Melbourne without a coverage problem.
Even recently (2wks ago) when I was in Shanghai, China I had roaming coverage with my TPG acc.

So far it's provided the same coverage as the old Telstra acc.

Similar story here. I changed from Telstra to OPTUS in June and haven't noticed the difference. Oh wait... there are some differences... cheaper, easier to access, better problem resolution and they aren't Telstra. Does it for me.

When my father moved out of his house and into a specialist hospital, I tried for 3 weeks to get onto Telstra (October last year) to get the line disconnected, but could never get through ... even after waiting on the line for 45 minutes more than once. I complained to the Ombudsman. Telstra responded 6 weeks later. It took another 8 weeks to sort it out. The phone was finally cut off on March 27th, 2009. He'd passed away by then. Not a fan of Telstra.
