I'd prefer Steel , depends on how they are manufactured Ray. Most I have seen are pretty lousy ie pressed / sheared / notched. So it effects the way in which the chain engages the teeth.
I have briefly used a Sprocket Specialists alloy rear sprocket on the salt 2 years ago --- loaned it off Hawkwind ( thanks again ) when I ran out of gearing options ( as I always do and did again this year too ). Beautifully made sprocket and no doubt CNC milled, prob made from 7075T6 which is strong / hard ally alloy - age hardened. They werent cheap.

C-45 is another designation for what most engineers in OZ refer to as K1045..... basically 0.45% carbon content. <i></i>
