I think if you check with your local motor registry, then you will find that the GS 500F is LAMS approved. THe GS 500E is the non faired version, so from what I know, the only difference between the GS 500E and F are the fairings....happy to be corrected if i'm wrong.
The GS 500F is an excellent bike. I started on one and Heidi is right, we all drop them at one point. I was lucky when I dropped mine, with only a small crack in the fairing around the indicator which was easily fixed.
