RE: A new quest - beginner bikes
If your getting a bike get the riding gear to go with it .
A good pair of Gloves , the first thing you'r going to do if a mishap happens is put your hands out .
A jacket , leather is best even if a little hot in warmer weather.
Boots , i don't much like the look of them or noise they make but the Oxtar ones are comfortable .
Dragin Jeans .
And a good fitting helmet , the current SHOEI is about the best i have had and it's not one of their top dollar ones . About $600 from memory .
The wife of a friend of mine was taking lessons on bike her bike and wasn't wearing her gloves when she came off , i think she broke a bone in her wrist as well as taking some skin off her hands.

Hey there damsel
reading your post it seems like you are going through what the better half was going through, admittedly she was a little spoilt being that the busa was her introduction to the world of two wheels, everything was either not sporty enough, didn't look big enough or to slow, borderline vanity...she wanted to look the goods I guess, personally any chick riding a bike, especially a sports bike look hot..,
Yes it has done wonders for relationship
Anyway back to your situation
j wanted the new 250 ninja or apprilla rs 125 for her learner bike but I just could not see the value in buying something new which was not to be the end goal
i m guessing you are a lot taller then my j so height would not be such an issue, j could actually touch easier on the busa then she could on the hyosong or the apprilla.
To be honest ask yourself this
There is a very good chance while you are learning you are going to drop the bike, hopefully at low speed in car park or driveway but more then likely it will happen, do you want to bust up your brand new learner bike lose heaps of dollars insured or not its still going to cost.
Personally my opinion would be to save your dollars for the bike of your dreams
We brought a zzr 250 show room condition; it was kept in the chicks lounge room, never seen water other then a damp chamois with 5000 km on the clock for $4000,
Still has the big bike look with full fairings( ouch, dollars if bike falls over)
I brought it back from sunny coast and had a friend ride the zzr. He had it up to 160 and the bike still more to go, so in saying that it would have little problem on a run with the boys
now we have been offered a little more then what we paid for it both private and trade in so when it comes time to buy her gsxr or busa it has not cost her anything to learn, compared to spending 9G+onroads on a new 250 getting 5g trade if lucky, less if dropped
second hand is a risky market but there are good units out there, personally i would stay away from those crap grey imports,6 bikes made into 1 with god only knows how many real km on the clock ( a ticking time bomb)
finally the zzr is still a fairly forgiving bike and yes she looks hot on
note: we wanted to buy new also until a couple of guys here steered us in the other direction; sorry r couldn't talk her into the naked bike(it was all about the look) guess those fairings may get a new paint job(hope not)
note 2 : as for the brand haysung i have no first hand experience however a friend who worked in bike sales including that brand told us to stay clear( j actually didnt mind the look of the 250) .
Thanks Surfabusa. I'm chasing new because I have a tax bill large enough to make me quietly choke with fury at our wonderful govt which rewards those who take extra risks and go the extra mile........ The accountant told me to buy a new car - but he has no clue..... obviously never driven a S2000 Very Happy Nearly choked again!!! LOL.... anyways, with the 50% rebate new is about the same out of pocket for me as secondhand.....
Idiot2
I think it's clear that Hyosung has a lot of damage control to do and I have enough battles without taking that one on!
The zzr does look nice in the pic... ultimately though - I'm a speed freak..... god help me!!! LOL. Picking up the bike if I drop it is a real concern though.... embarrassing enough to come off but you REALLY need to be up again as quick as possible before more people see!!!!!! Very Happy I don't believe that I'm saying this but I'll pop back into Kwacka and sit on one all the same - but boy oh boy - if that salesman is as sleezy as last time I swear I'll clot him one.....Knuppel2Knuppel2 Maybe you lot should hang around in the background for the entertainment....Pi_freak
This is all good. I've checked out the monster as well. Haven't sat on one but they have a dealership just around the corner. This is good. it's opening my horizons to what is available other than what the sales people are pitching....

Bit more expensive new but (1) apparently they hold their value and (2) I know you can afford it.
Both were very happy with the bikes and it seems they didn't become 'boring' as their experience level improved. Also, both these riders have gone on to buy much more powerful machines (in one case a GSXR1000, in the other a 1250 Bandit) but both opted to keep the F650 as well.
There are 3 or 4 styles of F650... I'm sure one would appeal.
Just a suggestion.
Is it on the list???? Must have missed it.... ok off to do more research!
hey Damsel i have ridden that zzr 250 and i thought it was far to small for me until i actually rode it! i am 6'3 and 116kg and was comfortable on it. they absolutely hammer for a 250 and are very comfy makes me think twice on what i want for a first bike, still i'll just see what you end up getting and go from there!
the busa that i will own is going to destroy everything in its path!!!!Biker2fast4u

Learn the Passion.
Suzuki has expanded its learner-approved range of motorcycles, already the largest in Australia, with the arrival of the 2009-model SV650S 'Learner Approved'.
The addition of the Learner Approved SV650S brings Suzuki's LAMS (Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme) approved range to a total of 12 motorcycles, providing choices to suit all shapes, sizes and preferences.
This SV650S meets LAMS criteria, which governs what motorcycles can be ridden by learner riders in Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory, A.C.T. and New South Wales.
The ECM (Engine Control Module) has been re-mapped to match power output with the legal requirements for learner riders, while remaining true to the model's handling and riding characteristics.
There is something about a V-twin sportsbike, the way it looks, sounds and feels. Two cylinders in a classic layout. An elongated exhaust note under acceleration. A feeling the SV650 range takes to a new level.
The latest generation SV650 series. So many radical solutions, so much unadulterated fun.

Sadly not for Qld. After some time with Qld transport today not much further down the road than I was when I started......(Ironically they do their training on it tomorrow! Though they really were trying hard to be helpful... ) and Suzuki much to my disappointment are not really batting for this with some very fuzzy commitment that sometime next year the SV650S Lams approved will be released.... wish they'd stop being such sooks and have another go.... recommend they take a shot of concrete and harden the @#$%* up..... If Hyosung can do it..... geez.....
Anyway, apparently Dept of Transport Qld will consider a well constructed argument to add the SV650 back to the list especially considering they are trying to align with other states. That being said - I need valid data on testing and why this bike and others like it should be allowed. Ohdear had a valid point in a PM that the ECM has also been aligned to meet the LAMS criteria so it's not just a matter of someone physically removing the restrictor once they've gotten their bike.... I guess it's same old same old, because of a few everyone is going to be treated like a criminal..... I'm outta my league with the technical so please send in whatever you've got or seen. Think I'm going to have a go Very Happy
