Lane Splitting - what's the go?

My understanding in SA is that you can pass stationary vehicles on the left and you can cross the white lines when going from one prescribed roadway to another, including cycle lanes only if it is not for a distance of more than 50 metres. This would make moving to the front at traffic lights legal and passing traffic jams going from one lane to another legal.
I followed a motorcycle cop through a traffic jam once and he just nodded as I went past later. Was I lucky??
