Can't help myself....here goes.
I've been associated with guys over the years who have belonged to "gangs". Even spent a few years going to the Hells Angels concerts at Broadford. Pluses were that they look after themselves and very well too. Negatives were that they were the ones selling bikes (mostly stolen) and drugs and also "policing" the place to keep law and order. The place was actually very safe in that sense. But there's no doubt that the hard core clubs are really based now on criminal activity. Bikes were just the original "badge" they used back in the 50's to set themselves apart. Now they are serious businesses, and some doing very well! There's a well known drag racing team that can travel the world and all of Australia, and bugger me! no sponsors! These days, the drug trade is so big, the whole lot is out of proportion. Tens of millions of dollars are involved. And as long as these guys are living very high on the business they can indulge in things like gang warfare. It's all over who has the biggest patch to sell on. It happens to a lesser scale in just about every suburb in Oz I think. It's a shame that in the 50's and 60's, anyone who rode a bike was automatically labelled as "bad". That association is reinforced every time a guy with a beard and a Harley is in the news. The gangs now have lots of bikes, no doubt about that, but has there been a case of a drive by shooting from a Harley? I bet the boys doing their business day to day drive cages 99% of the time, and 1% of the time they pose on the Harley!
My solution is that the cops should all stake out the wrong places, make sure they are on the other side of town while the shootings are done, and when they stop, go and arrest the last club (sorry) gang standing!
Where's my bloody soap box gone?
