RC what your saying is correct mate if you are buying and want a new bike then the K8 is a better buy than getting a Gen 1 and restoring it. This discussion started out as is it worth upgrading to the gen2 if you already own a good gen 1, especially one that has already had the basic mods ie pipe etc.
The answer to that question is based on what you want to achieve, if you want a new bike and care about trade in prices in the furture then go for the gen 2 its a good bike and a bit better performance than a gen 1.
If you are only after the best bang for your buck and the max hit of adrenalin then spending a few bucks on the gen 1 you alredy own is the smart way to go. For less than the upgrade price you will smash a gen 2 in every aspect, including braking and handling.
It all comes down to what you want to achieve. As Glen said the easy way is to spend cash and go new or spend less and improve what you already have, one path is easy and the other a bit harder. Horses for courses. Not criticising either path here mate both are good even stock gen 1 or 2 is great
