gen 2 chain and sprockets

question, can we add links to a gen 2 chain if you put a bigger sprocket on or do you need a whole new chain? i wish to extend the wheelbase as opposed to keeping the same number of links and shortening the wheelbase.

dealer yet to confirm the above.

also is the gen 1 chain different to the gen 2 as i have a brand new gen 1 chain in a box.
