Herman Melville didn't catch on as a major literary figure until long after his death in 1891. He had become so disillusioned by the commercial failure of "Moby Dick" (1851) and other novels that he gave the pen and became a clerk in New York. His "Billy Budd" wasn't even published until 1924.
