WHO WAS JACK THE RIPPER?

•

Prince Albert Victor
The Duke of Clarence and grandson of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert Victor was believed to have suffered from syphilis of the brain which drove him to commit the series of murders. It is suggested that there was a cover-up to protect the image of the royal family.

•
Aaron Kosminski
Kosminski was a Polish-Jewish hairdresser who was probably insane. He is reported to have hated prostitutes, he lived in Whitechapel and is rumoured to have had homicidal tendancies. He was committed to an asylum in 1890.

•
William Grant Grainger
A well known East End drunk and Irish ships fireman, Grainger was known to both associate with and have previously attacked prostitutes. He had once trained as a medical student.

•
Dr. Francis Tumblety
Irish doctor Tumblety, who spent most of his life in the US, was a character shrouded in secrecy. He fled London in 1888 while awaiting trial for indecent assault against four men. When he died in 1903 a collection of preserved uteruses was found among his possessions.

•
William Bury
A popular suspect, Bury was hanged for murdering his prostitute wife in April 1889, five months after the final ripper murder. At the time of the murders he was living in the East End and the mutilations found on his wife's body were similiar to those left by the ripper.

•
Joseph Barnett
Barnett was the lover of Mary Jane Kelly, the ripper's fifth and final victim. It is suggested that he killed the other women to scare Mary Jane into leaving her life of prostitution and killed her when she found out his horrific secret. Witness reports suggest the couple had a furious row the night before her murder.

•
Montague Druitt
Even Druitt's own family suspected he might be the ripper. His body was recovered from the Thames in December 1888 but had been there for about a month. Supporters of this suspect believe he may have committed suicide after the final murder in November of that year.

•
Walter Sickert
Sickert was an artist who expressed perhaps a little too much interest in the ripper murders and could describe the injuries in detail. Some people believe that the famous 'Dear Boss' letter sent to police by the Ripper is in his disguised hand writing.

•
Sir William Gull
Royal physician and Freemason, Gull was suspected of carrying out the murders to cover up the possibilty of Scandal against the Duke of Clarence. It was reported that he was seen in Whitechapel on the nights of the murders.
