I now know of one person who received a 4 digit fine in court after having his number plate blocked by his registration label. "Fitting a device so as to avoid detection by speed detection equipment", or something like that.... Second offence, so it went to court. Yes, four digits!

You can thank our friends at Transurban CityLink for that...losing too much revenue due to covered/removed front number plates..probably got into a minister's ear during a lunch/junket and hence it became policy in December 2002, along with the new speeding criteria...Who says large corporations don't dictate government policy?? i had an opportunity to inspect a bike which had a "Stealth Plate" installed purchased from www.motofx.com.au for $377 (not including installation - which was quite a big job) and i must say that i was not impressed with it at all,,

first of all it's quite a big thing which already makes it look a bit suss and the glass is not totally clear which further invites critisism,,

when viewed from any angle it is very reflective so i think it will be deemed illegal from that point of view alone and of course it is HIGHY illegal to use it anyway,,

a small concealed switch mounted conveniently provides a current to a fillament sandwiched between 2 panels of glass which turns totally white when switched on, concealing your number plate and a small led indicates it's status,,

i would give it a big thumbs down and what would you use it for anyway????

i have seen another system somewhere on the net called "eclipse" which looks much smarter (at least in the photo) and it turns black when a curent is fed to it, like an arc welding helmet glass.. anyone know a bit more about that???

Hello peoples, I'm back from the ride across the Nullabor!! AWESOME - I'll post some pictures soon when I figure out a picture program to use!?!?

Anyway, over in Perth apparently the cop bikes are trialling out stick-on front number plates on the windscreens that are reflective and sensor cameras that are over 1 metre high can read them. If trial proves successful, they are apparently issued onto new bikes!........But how if you don't have a bike windscreen visor, how.....???? and Harley's????

Hasn't this been trialled before??

Blue centurian,i'de be too ashamed to tell anyone i was a cop and a t.o.g to boot......scum of the earth.But seriously most people only have to deal with cops when they are getting booked.Not a good image for you guys.I know in N.Z they have a seperate branch for road offences,which has nothing to do with cops,so it doesn't drag your image through the mud.Still i have seen fuckwits on the road who deserve everything they get,trouble is there is never a cop around when you need one.

No wikkas rod, but in all honesty I've FAR more cars than bikes..and the three bikes I remember doing a bolt..a Gixxer thou, a TLR, and a ZX-7, I didn't even bother with...and if ever you need a copper...check out the nearest Maccas...teehee...

They cant make you put a numberplate on the windshield because you have to be able to see through it.... hence the "replace when scratched" label!

What I think is bullshit, is that even sections of main arterial roads have been made 50 zones.... What happened to "local traffic areas".

I think revenue raising has become a bigger issue than road safety. If safety was the "only concern" we'd have all vehicles limited to 10kph with big foam bumpers. The government is supposed to consider the economic cost of reducing speed limits (ie freight and commuter travel times vs road accidents) but I bet no one here can get a hold of the study report... not even bluecenturion.

Also, can you be booked for following a cop car at 80 in a 60 zone when they dont have their lights flashing?

just out my curiosity, now that you have picked up your busa and ridden it you will understand why a lot of people are concerned with speed limits as staying on them with the busa is probably the hardest thing to do, anyway being on the force how does most of the guys you work with feel about the way we are heading down the UK road of having cameras on every road, do you feel that the work should be left to you guys to carry out or these fat bastards that sit in their cars with their cameras and hide behind the heavy tinting. l personally feel that if you speed and get caught then and there you will learn your lesson but receiving a fine 2 weeks later is a load of crap. am l the only one that feels this way???

First to answer beestroyer's question...technically you can't be booked for travelling behind a police car...one way police use to determine a vehicle's speed is to maintain an even distance..usually from behind and get a reading from the police car's calibrated digital speedo..there USED TO be the method of doing the same thing from the front, but that pratice was officially ceased by the Powers That Be, back in about 1997, after too many lost court cases...it's actually against Force policy to do this now...doesn't mean you won't be stopped by a copper using this method...he may even try to bluff you into a ticket, but the maintain even distance method should only be used by police travelling behind you... And GroundRash...speak to any toggie (TMU officer) they'll agree (off the record) that cameras have taken a lot of the "fun" out of doing highway work...I guess you could call it a game...like a battle of wits..the copper with the radar (now laser) trying to find a half decent hiding spot in order to catch speeders, but if you kept your eyes open, you usually saw them..now..with camera cars..using anything from Magnas to RAV 4's to Hyundai Santa Fe 4wd's a lot of that has gone...(sigh..) And yes I picked my 'Busa up yesterday...and YES it's mighty hard to ride at the speed limit...bloody hell...I'm hooked... Just remember guys - it's the politicians that make the laws not the coppers - they just enforce them. Speed Camera's / 4km/h limit's in NSW, automatic bans (which are now in force in QLD) - they're all the work of the legislature.

Of course there is police discretion and that obviously in many many circumstances it's exercised blindly but the anger that is pent up inside us about these speed v safety issues is wasted on the police - it's government policy and the makers of the same which deserve our roth.

In fact, I am in the process of drafting an open letter to the QLD government about their speed kills campaign - in particular the errant lies they come up with about the effect of speed and road fatalities. Here is a good one recently bandied - "50% of road deaths were caused by speed". I defy them to come up with some proof. - I'll post the letter when it's done.

In fact the focus on speed is perhaps one of the main reasons I sold my Busa - I cant afford to lose my licence for getting done at 40 over (6 months auto now in QLD), which I ended up doing practically every waking moment on the Busa. We see if the Supermotard is any different though!

Quite right GDYUP, but ONLY if I'm pulled over by another copper... Go see my earlier post about what can happen if I'm sprung by a camera at licence-losing speed...and ac busa is quite correct in relation to the legislation/enforcement issue..and to quote Boris in AMCN Vol 52 No 17 (the one with the black cover and the pic of Barry Sheene) "Speed doesn't kill..stupidity kills" and this one..."..since when has safety got anything whatsoever to do with riding motorcycles, anyway? Look, you can't even put the two words together - motorcycle safety - without people laughing at you , can you?.....You sit on a two-wheeled motor that does obscene speeds, put a fibreglass bucket lined with esky foam on your head, pull on a few kilos of flayed cow-surface and pretend you're "safe" do you?"
