I have recently completed the fuel filter mod on my Gen1(2005). When I found out how much for the genuine filter I had kittens. I started with a new pump which slots straight into where the old one was. It comes with a new tea bag filter. You do have to engage in some soldering to make a really good job but well worth it.
I have now bypassed the fuel filter using the following method. Wont write it up, just follow the link.

Under the fuel tank I have used a Ryco Z200 filter:

New lines and hose clamps. Must have set me back $90 for the whole job, including the new pump:

Takes a couple of hours to do. You can do it with a half full tank but easier when empty.
From here on in I can replace the fuel filter within 20 minutes. At $16.50 from SuperCheap it may as well be a part of a general service.
Performance seems to have returned to normal but with only one point left I will have to wait until I have a group to hide in to test....
