G'day
Risking opening an old can of worms here, but has anyone any recent experience (I say this because using the search facility returns posts 5 years old) with PC5? And any comment they'd like to make? Or even versus reflashing?

PCV? How about WOFTAM!
ECU Editor or Woolich Race Tuned software is the only credible solution. Seriously, you can't use PCV or a TRE to get around the ignition and STVA restrictions. Not without a rough unification of gear groups or gear-based maps which then results in 'one power curve suits all' as opposed to individually optimised power curves for each gear (and each cylinder!).

The fact that the posts you found are 5 years or more old is probably the best indication that the PC5 path is effectively redundant.

I'm running a PCV on my 2011 gen 2. NO complaints here.
Strong power curve, very nice response and my bike runs, sounds and looks great.
That's good enough for me.....

After doing a bunch of research here(with some great advice) there and everywhere when making a similar decision myself I opted for Power Commander. Thanks to the advice I got here, I went with Power Commander to keep it simple for myself, as I wouldn't have a clue what to do with ECU software. Undoubtedly though, you can do much more with ECU software as Camel suggested.
I have a Yoshi full system with PC3, and am very happy with the set up.
Perhaps one day with the time to spare and someone a lot smarter with software than me, I will go down the road of ECU editor or the like and expand the horizons of my tune. But for now I am happy.

Kendo and Alchemist, I feel much the same. So far...
Belzybob, yep, and all the old posts are regarding PC3. We are now looking at PC5...
Camel, you are undoubtedly one clever and techo bloke. I enjoy reading your posts on other subjects for sure. Thank you all.
Anyone else have an opinion? Well, one backed up by experience would be preferable :-)

PC3's are still useful with the older Gen 1's that can't be flashed. Apart from that, I don't know much about them...

The '99 would be a bit harder but the 06 can definately be flashed.

The PCV is now available for the 99-00 (Part number 20-042) and they can be bought for under US$300 delivered. There is NO ECUeditor option for this model unless you update the ignition system and ECU to a later model.
I went with the PCV as it was much cheaper than upgrading my 99's ignition system, as I have done with previous bikes, which was then unable to do what I needed it to so I had to buy another computer to control ignition. At the end of the day I had no choice but to use an aftermarket fuel/timing computer anyway.
The PCV has changed the game regarding ECUeditor vs Power Commander, where the PC3 lost out previously I think the ECUeditor loses out now where the mass market is concerned.
PCV features:
-100/+250% fuel adjustment
+/- 20% timing adjustment
Fuel/timing adjustable PER gear
Fuel/timing adjustable PER cylinder
Fuel/timing adjustments based on temp/boost inputs *NOT POSSIBLE WITH ECUeditor ON GEN1*
Dual map switchable
Adjustable rev limit
Built in launch limiter
Pit lane speed limiter
If you buy a PCV-PTi, it is supplied with a Bosch 3 Bar MAP sensor as part of the PCV harness for boost applications! No mucking around, plug and play with an easy interface and no more downloading Renesas, interface drivers, troubleshooting etc.

that sounds really interesting M.. I have yet to pull apart my 99 to see why PC3 isn;t working.. I guess that measn it's not plugged in either ??? all new to ignition adjustment systems....

Yeah mate, finally they have some up to date features.
The PC3 only adjusts fuel, and not ignition unfortunately. The PC doesn't have that many connections so making sure they're all good should be easy. That model only powers up with the ignition on so if you want to check it's holding a map you'll have to hook up the 9v battery adapter.

There is no power to it even with ignition on... Or motor running for that matter... Hooked up to laptop and no maps found so I am thinks pc3 is a dead duck

If this is a new bike with a pc already fitted , it may have been disconnected
they have been known to give hard starting, cranking lots before firing , and the fix was to remove the crank sensor connection from the pc
but quite possible if faulting it was completely disconnected
yes gen 1 turbo has a better option than previous with the map sensing pc
