Im assuming that everyone knows that when one comes off their bike there is an 80-90% chance that from the impact/sliding sparks will fly,so I ask,is carrying a jerry can full of fuel while riding the best option?maybe a van/car/ute as back up?just an idea!

Thanks for your concern adamski we have given the idea of carrying extra fuel on the back of a bike much thought We intend to ride in places where our standard tanks wont make it which equates to 1% of the entire trip where will need extra fuel In an ideal world a support vehicle would be good but it's not going to happen do we not go for this reason I think not. We all ride motorcycles and there's a certain amount of risk everytime you strap your helmet on and you can do things to leesen or increase your risk of injury or death carrying extra fuel for a trip like this and understanding how this will be carried and used when & where is paramount in our decision.

Where would you rate this risk carrying extra fuel or just riding a bike for that matter?

I personally wouldn't carry/stick a fuel can to me or my bike cause as you said, riding in itself upgrades your status to a temporary Australian but if you have it all sorted and safe than by all means, have fun and post pics.Pi_thumbsup

exploding fuel cans are very rare.. even when dragged along a road. From personal experience and a lot of stupid youngster stuff I know that it takes a direct flame (a min of 600 deg) to make fuel ignite (yes I have put out a ciggie in petrol). To get an ignition from a spark (as inside an engine) you require a very precise mixture or air/fuel. these days teh 1-15 ltr plastic jerry cans are ideal for transporting, even tied direct to your body. Unless someone throws a match at you I know you are safe. The only dangerous side to being covered in petrol is that it will stuff up your leathers and/or poly clothing...
I for one would be very comfortable in carry a jerry can full of fuel as long as the fumes are not effecting me.

some more useless info....
temp of a candle flame - 1400 C
blow torch - 1600 C
propane torch - 1900 C
Oxy troch - 3000 C

the 5 ltr jerry fits like a glove inside the tailbag.it is also cushioned by the wet weather gear and other stuff. leakproof and no fumes or anything.

Hey mungaman, I lived in Isa for 11yrs back from 1982 to 1994. Just wondering as I look @ the planned route (& I am sure this has been checked) but is the Boulia to Isa road all bitumen these days?

Zrex1200 think it is , never ridden on it , lot of road trains and 4wd travel on it and they wouldnt get off the for a bike ,would be like the old road from isa to cammooweal if you ridden or driven across that to border and back. would watch speed on it just in case you come across traffic.

The issues of carrying fuel to me are not the fear of it catching alight. I would be more concerned that it may come loose in an accident and hit me in the back of the neck. Think it would make more sense to have a single exhaust and mount an aux tank in place of off side muffler.

Ok thanks for everyones concerns about our jerry can issues
but apart from the jerry can actually catching itself alight, i cant see the the idea of it sparking on the road or hitting me during a crash as a problem
I THINK CRASHING WOULD BE THE PROBLEM TO BE CONCERN WITH.

I didn't think/say it was an issue or that it was going catch itself alight so your sarcasm is noted and I apologise for the concerned observation, have a safe and uneventful trip.
