fuel filter
#16
Rob , There is a very small, (10mm dia approx)plastic filter down the inlet
to the fuel pump . directly under the fuel regulator . Lots of blokes miss renewing or cleaning this one & it leads to very poor running eventually .
For some strange reason this filter blocks much faster if a fuel line under the tank is Kinked . I've had my 2000 since 2004 & have changed this filter twice & replaced the paper internal filter with new in 2007 .This applies to the 99 & 2000 only ( external fuel pump ).

because the 1st ones were very prone to blockages, I eventually got the shits with it and tore all the screens out, and took out the internal paper filter and threw it away. I then put a small $5.00 inline filter in the line. Change it every couple of services, simple to do, available everywhere, never had a problem since. - That was 10 years and over 100,000 km ago. Perhaps something similar could be done with the other ones?
Mate.. so glad to hear that. I've been looking at mine (99) and it looks like it pretty obvious to do what you have done. Guess you need to be careful with the hoses and not pinch them, but otherwise looks fairly simple?
Are there any problems in doing this?
Rob

like greeny said with the other little screen on the side.
It's just a pretty tight fit.
The only thing you need to do now is run it down low on fuel before the service. There is no tap on the tank(or it doesn't appear to work when I turn it) so I drain the tank so it doesn't spill everywhere when I replace the inline filter. Take note not to mix up the 2 lines - seems obvious, but mine spent a little time once with me wondering why it was running out of fuel and kept stalling after 170km, still showed full and then would only run about 400metres before each stall. Yep, hoses connected the wrong way Pi_freak. And always be very careful with not kinking those hoses everytime you lift the tank. EVERYTIME. - only other problem I ever really had with the '99 was cured with fitting a TRE - I assume the GPI was on the way out and this bypasses it. (see "light surge finally nailed") There is nothing more frustrating than your bike having intermittant probs and not running right.

A little bad experience for the T & B 'Busa. I had upgraded to a later model fuel tank with internal Fuel Pp. After many, many Klm's the bike started to surge every now & then, was slowly going down on power, I cleaned the K & N, threw new plugs at it, cleaned the throttle bodies etc, bike had mild improvement but still showed signs of either running lean/Fuel or having an electrical problem. As a lot of my recent miles have just been up & down the Highway (Over policed Hwy 1 Nth Coast) where I haven't been over about a dollar twenty. It wasn't till I gassed it hard (3up) to overtake a B Double that at 61/2-7thou'rpm the engine went flat and wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding, some short shifting of the gears and my nipping gear, seen us safely past the B Double...just! Straight home, into the shed and start pulling the ol' girl down. It felt like the PC3 had Zero mapped. Hooked the PC3 up to the laptop, it didn't want to communicate, uhha, problem found?? one dead PC3!?!. Quick call to Pitstop Pete, we concurred, best option, upgrade '99 ECU & Stator to 2001-'07. Something I had been wanting to do for some time, as flashing the later model ECU imo is a better bet than a PC3. I had also checked Fuel Pp at this time, all good at 43psi. I made a fatal mistake of not checking the Fuel Flow rate!!
A call to Maj, seeking his valued advice, (one of several calls to him over the next couple of day's) Maj had a spare ECU & Stator, so I snapped them up and as soon as they arrived I was fitting them. A quick check with Maj on which wiring pins to change & go where. I fire the 'Busa up and it is still sluggish. I warm it up & give it a big rev', no load, no rev' over 7thou, shooting flames and exhaust hot as hell. Whoops, exceptionally lean, shut it down, pull out the fuel Pp, put it on the bench & dismantle it. Grab the black plastic body/filter, back flush it, shake the shit out of it and watch the muddy crap flow out of it, place it into a container full of petrol, wash it, shake it, blow through it with HP Air, wash it again then reassemble it all, even Jen was getting her hands dirty, helping me clean the filter. Reinstall the Fuel Pp into the tank, hotwire the fuel Pp& check the fuel flow rate. 250ml in 10 seconds, 750 ml in 30 seconds, 1500 Ml in 60 sec's. Just what we are looking for. Maj say's 5cc's per hp in 60 sec's ( roughly 175 HP X 5cc = 875cc or Ml) Okay, flow rate is excellent, time for a test ride. Bundy is not letting me go without her, so up on the tank, hooked up, let's go. I head south down the over policed Hwy at 100kph, Bike is feeling more responsive, I turn off for Stuarts Point and then the back way to Scotts Head. I pull over, do a quick check of everything, let Bundy have a nervous pee, I have a nervous pee, climb back on, select first and gas it, straight to 9thou & pulling clean, pull 2nd, front wheel clawing for sky, trees becoming blurred, pull 3rd, still on the gas, wow this bike is pulling harder than it ever has, 4th just got time for 5th before braking friggin' hard for the 25kph right hander, back on the gas in 2nd then 3rd then back on the Anchors for a series of 25kph corners. Arhhh! yes, that smile on my dial that only a sweet running 'Busa can give.
Bundy's happy, she is hanging over the front, give it more dad!!! I'm as happy as a pig in shit. A big thanks to Pitstop Pete and Maj' for their excellent advice and steering me straight.Pi_thumbsup
Hopefully this episode may help someone else out there experiencing similar problems with their 'Busa.

I will be going to an inline Pp (external) and an external Fuel Filter & Reg'. Filter will be off a Commodore or similar, cheap & easy to obtain.
Watch this space!! Biker

Cheers,
