Haha, I wish I knew where it ended up Pete.
Can't thank Greg enough for all his help. Very generous guy and a wealth of knowledge! What everyone thought (hoped)will be a quick 30 minute job turned into a full weekend. After swapping over a few parts and making some adjustments, I went for a quick burn down the road. I was happy to see it no longer cutting out at 8k (Pete you were right about the kick stand switch) but this was short lived as after a few more squirts the bike started to backfire. I pulled over to find the bike no longer wants to run. A quick call to Greg and the bike got trailered back to base. Unplugging the pump feed revealed a lack of flow. The fuel pump was very unhealthy and had been opened up at some stage. The fuel filter was blocked and full of what looked like mud. It's a mild miracle that it ran at all. Pump replaced with a big walbro unit still had the bike motionless. Long story short, somehow the pin left the cam and made a mark on the cam sensor which I'm hoping is now faulty as the bike is still not running well. It has noticably more power now, but it's still not running well. As soon as I replace the cam sensor I'll post up another update. Oh, I'll be removing the sump to see if I can find the missing pin ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
Ross if your removing the sump pull out the pick up filter/screen & clean it or replace it seeing you have the sump off & then brace yourself when you see the crap in there,

Just a quick update:
Replaced cam sensor got the bike running without a missfire again, but still very jerky below 3k. I replaced the cam as well to be on the safe side and now i have a spare for the intake cam mod :) New fuel filter and pressure regulator arrived last night so I quickly installed it. Unfortunately the problem still exists.

Lack of time and money has seen the bike abandoned in the shed these past few months.
Finally got some time off work so got stuck into it again. Pulled the sump off to find missing cam pin!! The sump also contained a crazy amount of random sandy type crap. Cleaned out the strainer thing and it was so full of crap I could have built a sand castle out of it!! Installed new stator and crank angle sensor. Tomorrow I'm going to flash the tune Greg gave me and take it for a spin. Fingers crossed it's finally fixed as I'm running out of things to replace.

Rode the bike to work and back today and it's much improved!
No longer feels like I'm riding a bucking bull. It's still not perfect in the on/off throttle transition at low revs, but finally what I call rideable. Will see if I can iron it out by teaking the map a little.

Thats great Ross
probably needs a little more fuel in the ragged areas of the IAP map try +5%

Thanks mate, I've bumped it up 5% from 2400 to 3000 under light load. Hoping for some reasonable weather to test it out.

Bumping the IAP map up 5% in the rough areas made it much smoother at idle but on the road it still feels no different. Could it somehow be a slight fault in the ECU?

Hi Ross,
It pains me to follow this post. I'm curious as to what has been done. So my questions are based on a sequential fault finding approach. They've probably already been checked by my distinguished colleagues. 1. You mentioned in your first post that you replaced your rings and checked your valve clearances. Later you found 'sandy type crap' in your sump. What is your compression pressure now? Valves can settle further after a valve job. recheck your clearances. 2. You found your fuel system to be contaminated. Have you cleaned/had your injectors cleaned and tested? Last week I spent a good two hours resurrecting a set of gummed up injectors. Is the pump flowing volume and pressure to spec at the rail? 3. Have you replaced your plugs? 4. Have you bypassed your clutch switch? 5. Are you getting any fault codes? The ECU is quite robust. I've seen them operate quite happily in an off-road buggy despite being unrestrained! It's usually the sensors or wiring which go first. That sidestand switch might be playing up too, i.e. intermittent fault. Camel |
