Good Morning Guys,
I bought my first busa a couple of weeks ago, so I'm still learning all about these things. Anyway .. I've been searching threads for an issue I have, and I think it may be the filters in the fuel pump problem that people have discussed previously. I thought it may have been originally dirty fuel, but after a few tanks of different fuel the problem seems to be getting progressively worse. It gives me the feeling it is about to run out of juice, but it has a full tank. My question is .. Can I clean these filters out myself ?, (I am reasonably spanner handy ) or should I leave it to my local bike mechanic ?. If the job isn't too hard, what is involved ? and what should I be looking out for (and what bits should I NOT play with ?). Also .. Is there any fuel that busas like better than others ? or are they a much of a muchness ?? .. I DO only run top shelf premium .. Shell VMax mainly.
Any help would be appreciated ..

I got my mechanic to clean the filter on my K6. He said that it wasnto too bad after 70,00ks.
What he did say was: Lucky we did that, the earth wire connected to the pump inside the tank was only hanging on by 2 strands of the wire.

hi dale, i just got me first busa bout 5 months back, and i have had the same issue by the sound of it,but i have a 99 busa,so i replaced both the supply and return fuel lines as they were kinked and flat being 11 years old and the fuel strainer plugs and two coils. its easy to replace the fuel strainer just remove the pump and split it then remove the retaining cover and spring to get to the strainer. but shortly ill be replaceing the pump with an after market unit.
IF IM NOT ON THE THROTTLE.....IM ON THE BEER BOTTLES!

strip down the pump/filter assembly and put your fingers over the inlets and outlet ,shake the filter then tip out via the inlet, refill with clean fuel and repeat, shake ,tip ,fill. after a while you get less mud , you could use compressed air to help blow out the fuel and crud but turn down the pressure and be carefull as you don't want to blow holes in the filter .

Mine is a 01 model so I'll check all these things. Did replacing these fix your 99? .. I assume it did
Cheers Maj .. Without sounding too much like a dummy .. Is there much to pulling the tank off ? I assume the pump / filter is underneath
I think I put the last question in the wrong place ..
Done a bit more reading up on the fuel pump .. am I correct in thinking that it is INSIDE the tank. If so .. I gather I have to pull tank off (lucky tank ), empty tank and then remove pump from bottom of tank ??. I dont have a manual and have never done this before .. Am I on the right track ??

Yep, internal pump and filter , if you get most of the fuel out you can tip the tank over and remove the pump/filter assembly

Not meaning to thread jack but didn't they switch over to an external pump...what year anybody???

Have got the pump out of the tank but cant see how it comes apart. I have an outlet pipe, but I cant find any inlet. I'm a bit worried about breaking something ..

I just stumbled on a thread (American forum I think) with a picture exactly the same as my pump .. and a warning that this pump is not to be tampered with . It also says the filter unit is "specially designed" and shouldn't need replacing until about 75000 miles .. mine has 43000 ks. Do different models have different pumps ?? or is mine just a weirdo ???. My pump / filter has the suzuki emblem stamped into it so Im assuming its not an aftermarket job ..
I think Ill reassemble, give the power connections a clean with contact cleaner and take to the doctor if symptoms persist ...

yeah doing the general maitenance on the 99-2000 external fuel pump has made a differance but its a bit late as the injectors are cloged as a result the previous owners probablly never replaceing the fuel strainer. ive had to replace alot of other parts, just old age stuff.

Injector screens clean easy, tip them up side down with a little fuel in them and tap on your palm or a piece of wood, do this several times and it will get most of the accumulated crap out of the small screens in the injector inlet .
To remove the pump and filter, remove the 2 screws from the bracket and the pump and sender wires , keeping note of the positions of the wire (phone pic) , then pull or pry the pump/filter assembly straight up, its a tight o ring fit on the outlet pipe , then the pump pulls out of the filter the same way, keep track of the o rings or rubber seals, they need to be placed on the male half of each fitting during assembly , the regulator can be removed too so you don't fill it with mud in the cleaning process , and the sender is also better off out of the way .

Got a bit overwhelmed last night and basically gave up. With your new info and a private email I received thismornin I now have the confidence to give it another go. Just so you know where Im at .. when I pulled the tank off last night it was the first time I'd seen a busa engine up close and personal (or any bike engine for that matter). Have never really worked on my bikes at all except for general maint. .. just sent them to the mechanic .. but I intend to get a bit more involved with this one.
