A New quest - Beginners bike
#1
Hi Everyone (This is from The Damsel )

I've been doing a lot of checking out of bikes for my first bike. I've also been hanging my bottom lip because the one I want (SV650) is not on the Qld LAMS list. I went to Teammoto in Springwood on Saturday and they had the Learner approved sticker on one which just added to the pain and confusion when I found out this morning that it's not. BTW Suzuki shut at 2pm on Saturday .... Wtf

They have recommended a Hyosung GT650s Tourer as a substitute. I've not heard much good about them but they've all been throw away lines without backing by any logical/technical answers. Some wise words from a fellow board member had me seriously looking at the GS500, they had just gone through what I'm doing so it was still very fresh in their minds. It was extremely helpful.

Here is what I have discovered - I need advice from experienced riders for sure, but it needs to be through the eyes of a learner who wants to stay in one piece - pretty sure that if I come undone the reaming I'd get from dad up in heaven (LOL!!!! Yes, I've bet on heaven!!!) would be much more painful than any off. I know I'll want a more powerful bike in one year; anyone whose read my other thread knows that I like going extremely fast and pushing things to their limit, so I need tempering to stay in one piece; I know that anything I get now will be pox compared to what you're all riding, but hey... I have to start somewhere.

So here is a kind request for you to offer some comments/experience. If I was your loving and most adored daughter, what bike would you all be steering me towards for my first bike under the new Qld Lams list? For the latest list go to:

http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/resource...090619.pdf

I'm only considering road bikes, of the sports variety. I'll be doing a bit of zipping around the city but mostly I want to get out for weekend rides. In my head I'm screaming track - but that can wait until I get significant experience under my belt. The bike has to be new.

Finally, I know it's not every riders dream to have their partners out there on the roads with them, but plenty I have spoken to wish they did or did more often. (Personally, I think it would be pretty damn hot to go for a weekend ride with your partner!!!) Your input here just may help some of the lovely lasses who have thought about it every now and again, but like me are finding it a tad frustrating, to getting going and make the choice to take the leap. If you contribute to this thread, I'm happy to collate the info into something useful which can go up on the website as a reference tool. There are too many options on the LAMS (Qld) list for a poll.

Anyway, I have to buy before the end of the financial year so any feedback would be appreciated.

Cheers
The Damsel

Sorry guys. I mucked this merge up. Managed to save this from cache files. You will need to start again...I better get outta here..bye

I would'nt buy any thing from TEAM HOMO they are rude dudes!!
If you get any road gear get it from HISIDE leathers at Salisbury Phil is a good guy and his prices are less than most.
As for the bike the Gs500 is a top bike my son had one and I really liked it but what you have to look at is how big or small are you are as you have to get your feet on the ground at some stage LOL.
I dont like the GT650 or 250 as far as I have heard they like to corrode and the Gs 500 has some issues with this as well but not as bad as the GT650.
But in the end it all comes down to how much you want to spend.

G'day
As it happens, my daughter is looking to upgrade at the moment. She has a 250 Across which she particularly likes, but is looking for something with more go. She would like a 600cc motor transplanted into her Across probably. But i have suggested she find a bike that fits her physically (she's not real tall) and she likes. Simple as that, no? Those are the only two real parameters?

RE: A new quest - beginner bikes
If your getting a bike get the riding gear to go with it .

A good pair of Gloves , the first thing you'r going to do if a mishap happens is put your hands out .

A jacket , leather is best even if a little hot in warmer weather.

Boots , i don't much like the look of them or noise they make but the Oxtar ones are comfortable .

Dragin Jeans .

And a good fitting helmet , the current SHOEI is about the best i have had and it's not one of their top dollar ones . About $600 from memory .

The wife of a friend of mine was taking lessons on bike her bike and wasn't wearing her gloves when she came off , i think she broke a bone in her wrist as well as taking some skin off her hands.

Hey there damsel

reading your post it seems like you are going through what the better half was going through, admittedly she was a little spoilt being that the busa was her introduction to the world of two wheels, everything was either not sporty enough, didn't look big enough or to slow, borderline vanity...she wanted to look the goods I guess, personally any chick riding a bike, especially a sports bike look hot..,

Yes it has done wonders for relationship

Anyway back to your situation

j wanted the new 250 ninja or apprilla rs 125 for her learner bike but I just could not see the value in buying something new which was not to be the end goal

i m guessing you are a lot taller then my j so height would not be such an issue, j could actually touch easier on the busa then she could on the hyosong or the apprilla.

To be honest ask yourself this
There is a very good chance while you are learning you are going to drop the bike, hopefully at low speed in car park or driveway but more then likely it will happen, do you want to bust up your brand new learner bike lose heaps of dollars insured or not its still going to cost.

Personally my opinion would be to save your dollars for the bike of your dreams

We brought a zzr 250 show room condition; it was kept in the chicks lounge room, never seen water other then a damp chamois with 5000 km on the clock for $4000,

Still has the big bike look with full fairings( ouch, dollars if bike falls over)

I brought it back from sunny coast and had a friend ride the zzr. He had it up to 160 and the bike still more to go, so in saying that it would have little problem on a run with the boys

now we have been offered a little more then what we paid for it both private and trade in so when it comes time to buy her gsxr or busa it has not cost her anything to learn, compared to spending 9G+onroads on a new 250 getting 5g trade if lucky, less if dropped

second hand is a risky market but there are good units out there, personally i would stay away from those crap grey imports,6 bikes made into 1 with god only knows how many real km on the clock ( a ticking time bomb)

finally the zzr is still a fairly forgiving bike and yes she looks hot on

note: we wanted to buy new also until a couple of guys here steered us in the other direction; sorry r couldn't talk her into the naked bike(it was all about the look) guess those fairings may get a new paint job(hope not)

note 2 : as for the brand haysung i have no first hand experience however a friend who worked in bike sales including that brand told us to stay clear( j actually didnt mind the look of the 250) .

Thanks Surfabusa. I'm chasing new because I have a tax bill large enough to make me quietly choke with fury at our wonderful govt which rewards those who take extra risks and go the extra mile........ The accountant told me to buy a new car - but he has no clue..... obviously never driven a S2000 Very Happy Nearly choked again!!! LOL.... anyways, with the 50% rebate new is about the same out of pocket for me as secondhand.....
Idiot2

I think it's clear that Hyosung has a lot of damage control to do and I have enough battles without taking that one on!

The zzr does look nice in the pic... ultimately though - I'm a speed freak..... god help me!!! LOL. Picking up the bike if I drop it is a real concern though.... embarrassing enough to come off but you REALLY need to be up again as quick as possible before more people see!!!!!! Very Happy I don't believe that I'm saying this but I'll pop back into Kwacka and sit on one all the same - but boy oh boy - if that salesman is as sleezy as last time I swear I'll clot him one.....Knuppel2Knuppel2 Maybe you lot should hang around in the background for the entertainment....Pi_freak

This is all good. I've checked out the monster as well. Haven't sat on one but they have a dealership just around the corner. This is good. it's opening my horizons to what is available other than what the sales people are pitching....

(Yesterday 07:40pm)Astro Wrote: I've had 2 friends use F650 BMW's as their learner bikes.

Bit more expensive new but (1) apparently they hold their value and (2) I know you can afford it.

Both were very happy with the bikes and it seems they didn't become 'boring' as their experience level improved. Also, both these riders have gone on to buy much more powerful machines (in one case a GSXR1000, in the other a 1250 Bandit) but both opted to keep the F650 as well.

There are 3 or 4 styles of F650... I'm sure one would appeal.

Just a suggestion.

Is it on the list???? Must have missed it.... ok off to do more research!

hey Damsel i have ridden that zzr 250 and i thought it was far to small for me until i actually rode it! i am 6'3 and 116kg and was comfortable on it. they absolutely hammer for a 250 and are very comfy makes me think twice on what i want for a first bike, still i'll just see what you end up getting and go from there!
the busa that i will own is going to destroy everything in its path!!!!Biker2fast4u

Learn the Passion.
Suzuki has expanded its learner-approved range of motorcycles, already the largest in Australia, with the arrival of the 2009-model SV650S 'Learner Approved'.

The addition of the Learner Approved SV650S brings Suzuki's LAMS (Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme) approved range to a total of 12 motorcycles, providing choices to suit all shapes, sizes and preferences.

This SV650S meets LAMS criteria, which governs what motorcycles can be ridden by learner riders in Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory, A.C.T. and New South Wales.

The ECM (Engine Control Module) has been re-mapped to match power output with the legal requirements for learner riders, while remaining true to the model's handling and riding characteristics.

There is something about a V-twin sportsbike, the way it looks, sounds and feels. Two cylinders in a classic layout. An elongated exhaust note under acceleration. A feeling the SV650 range takes to a new level.

The latest generation SV650 series. So many radical solutions, so much unadulterated fun.

Sadly not for Qld. After some time with Qld transport today not much further down the road than I was when I started......(Ironically they do their training on it tomorrow! Though they really were trying hard to be helpful... ) and Suzuki much to my disappointment are not really batting for this with some very fuzzy commitment that sometime next year the SV650S Lams approved will be released.... wish they'd stop being such sooks and have another go.... recommend they take a shot of concrete and harden the @#$%* up..... If Hyosung can do it..... geez.....

Anyway, apparently Dept of Transport Qld will consider a well constructed argument to add the SV650 back to the list especially considering they are trying to align with other states. That being said - I need valid data on testing and why this bike and others like it should be allowed. Ohdear had a valid point in a PM that the ECM has also been aligned to meet the LAMS criteria so it's not just a matter of someone physically removing the restrictor once they've gotten their bike.... I guess it's same old same old, because of a few everyone is going to be treated like a criminal..... I'm outta my league with the technical so please send in whatever you've got or seen. Think I'm going to have a go Very Happy

Hi Mutha.... I'm official! Have learners, booked in for qride on 3/7/09, gear sorted... just got to get this whole bike thing done :)
From the Suzuki website: Nice sidestep.....

The information contained on this website is relevant to the Australian States and Territories of ACT, News South Wales, Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria where the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme is in place. If you reside in Queensland or Western Australia please contact your relevant Road Authority for information about what motorcycles are approved for learners in your region.

Just been on the phone to Suzuki... They assure me that they are onto it. They can't say if it will happen, or when it will happen or if the sky is blue..... Apparently I just have to sit tight... lucky enough plenty of the dealerships will take my money now and hold onto it just in case it does happen..... lol

GS500 is looking the go if I can't get what I want. Don't want to spend the $ on a Ducati Monster at the moment. It's only for a year.

I'm 174cm tall and only weigh 63kg -(I like to think all muscle, but who am I kidding!!??). I'm out and about this arvo to sit on a few more. I'll ring Hiside to see what prices they can do. Thanks :)

Hey Damsel,
Do you know you have until December 31st to claim the tax break.

I will be taking advantage of the tax break myself to buy a new Boring Car!

Not in any hurry to do so, been to busy and need to shop around.

I want the Holden SSV Ute, nice Black one, to go with my bike. Smitten

How things have changed.
Way back when I got my license if you had a full car license they gave you a full bike license.
Younger brother had a different approach. At 16 bought an over size bike and put gaffa tape over the capacity stickers on the side covers. - Was occasionally pulled over, the cops would just laugh at the L-plate and obvious "gaffa tape mod", but he never got booked.

If you are serious about the GS500, go and get the best price you can get. I'll screw ACTION down here for a better price, and we'll cross-reference. Also, if you are getting the GS, you might want to think about the 'F', GSF500, it is faired and slightly cooler. In saying that, the fairings get a bit expensive when you drop it in the driveway, and you will, we all did, but it is COOLER! And that can't be undersold.

ok being in NSW what the heck is LAMS?

i,m assuming its the nsw version of the learners limits weight to ratio buisness.

on that assumption only people in queensland can give you a direction on the sort of CC'S you are legally to ride.

we all can suggest bikes to you,but it must feel good for you.

dams from your background you have said it wont take long to catch up and riding a busa.TrophyClap

just take them for test rides.the more the better.

we all had to start out some where

Thanks Mutha. I believe it is on a sliding scale re amount of tax break and time of purchase. Unfortunately I have to spend by 30/6/09 regardless - ridiculous isn't it???? LOL.... I can see you standing out in the carpark looking at your matching bike and ute!!!! Love it! Very Happy

I think if you check with your local motor registry, then you will find that the GS 500F is LAMS approved. THe GS 500E is the non faired version, so from what I know, the only difference between the GS 500E and F are the fairings....happy to be corrected if i'm wrong.

The GS 500F is an excellent bike. I started on one and Heidi is right, we all drop them at one point. I was lucky when I dropped mine, with only a small crack in the fairing around the indicator which was easily fixed.

Yes, sorry Damsel, I had my F in the wrong place (isn't that always the way). It is the GS500F, the only difference is the fairing. They'll show you at the shop. Another nice thing about this bike is that it really keeps its resale value. You'll the length of your restrictions out of it, then be able to sell it for only a few 1000 less than you paid for it.

I'd agree the GS500F would be a pick. Just that bit more fairing. I looked for a long time and was sitting around these bikes. (However never eventuated)

Hi Missy! Unfortunately only the E is on the list Wtf

also heard today from Suzuki Springwood that whatever is on the list in Qld on 1/7/09 will be the same for all states so WtfWtf I find this hard to believe as it would be an administrative nightmare to monitor or police!!! Imagine those on their P's who just bought a LAMS approved bike in other states now having the rules changed on them! I have heard this twice now - once from the staff at Qld Transport at Springhill and now Suzuki Springwood... Thank goodness they are not running a private business - it would be bust by now!!!

Anyway - here is what I have on prices and items - if anyone can help bring them down I'd really appreciate it - even buy you a beer or two if that's your thing!

GS500E (09 model) $7650 on road inc 12 mths rego
Shoei Helmet XR-1000 (small) in Camino black/silver - $654
Sidi Vertigo Boots (size 8.5) $400
Sp2 gloves (black, medium) $87
Shift jacket (black, size 12) $499 (not sure of name but white one has an ugly blue and white zebra lining!!Wtf)
Dainese Jacket - Newsam (black $649 by Kawaski, and black/red or black/yellow $520 by Suzuki Springwood) back armour $117.

haven't haggled over jeans.

Any advice? Tomorrow is the day I buy....

The price on the bike looks good, but your gear sounds a bit steep. I'll ring my guys tomorrow to see what kind of price I can get on the bike. I'm not sure I can get much better though, it sounds good to me. Once you get a firm price on the bike, then start to negotiate on the gear. Ask if they will do you a deal if you buy all your gear at the same place. If they say they can't help you and they want you to pay ticket price, walk away and go somewhere else (for the gear). Thye can do pretty good deals on gear, specially if you are spending that kind of money.
