Like the old JPS (John Player Special) special (formula 1) livery, that always was an eye catcher, not that it had gold wheels but plenty gold decals on black.

Ok my thoughts.

start with a 50,000k 2002 bussa. well cared for but well used!

lets spend up getting it back into shape.

new steering head bearings plus labour,
new wheel bearings plus labour,
respray and decals,
repair any ageing to alloy parts, anodising plus labour,
re powder coating wheels,
new larger rotors, Brake pads, braided lines,
reco brake calipers,
new levers, reco brake, clutch master cylinders,
reconditioning forks or upgrading,
reconditioning or replacing rear shock,
new swing arm bearings, link bearings,
replace chain and sprockets,
New tyres,
Full service, fluids and tappets,
new cam chain and tensioner,
New clutch plates and springs,
get the seat re skinned.

Now we have a ten year old design riding and look as good as it did when new!

It will guzzle more fuel than a gen 2,
the speedo will still show 50,ooo klm
will still look out dated next to a gen2
will still have 50,000 k of wear rattles in the motor,
the gear box will still feel lose,
wont go as hard as a gen 2
and you will lose a lot of money when you decide to trade in the future.

Buy a gen 2 and you will benefit on suzuki's improvements learnt from
10yrs with the original design, save on repairs and fuel.

when your on the gen2, the ugly arse is not what you will be looking at,
but that new dash will keep you happy.

i had the chance to dyno a gen 1 and go for a decent ride, then a couple of days later i got my hands on a gen 2 then did the same ride.

gen 1 had engine noises rattles normal for 50 k plus,
lots of bottom end torque, felt raw and rode like a bike with 50,oooks

The gen2 was way better to ride in every aspect. It was modern, quite and felt like a modern bike.

always wanted a Gen1 until i rode the gen 2!

i like the torque of the gen 1 with the smoothness of the gen2
so i brought Blackbird

RC what your saying is correct mate if you are buying and want a new bike then the K8 is a better buy than getting a Gen 1 and restoring it. This discussion started out as is it worth upgrading to the gen2 if you already own a good gen 1, especially one that has already had the basic mods ie pipe etc.

The answer to that question is based on what you want to achieve, if you want a new bike and care about trade in prices in the furture then go for the gen 2 its a good bike and a bit better performance than a gen 1.

If you are only after the best bang for your buck and the max hit of adrenalin then spending a few bucks on the gen 1 you alredy own is the smart way to go. For less than the upgrade price you will smash a gen 2 in every aspect, including braking and handling.

It all comes down to what you want to achieve. As Glen said the easy way is to spend cash and go new or spend less and improve what you already have, one path is easy and the other a bit harder. Horses for courses. Not criticising either path here mate both are good even stock gen 1 or 2 is greatPi_thumbsup

Well then Rod, the answer to your first question is YES.
You need to get a black K9 under your arse.
Or a gold or even a white. Just do it!

I reckon shredders on the money. From my perspective i made the right choice for dragracing,a gen2 is heavier and carries it weight further back making it less suitable and slower.I did my homework on this before i upgraded my gen1 motor. If i didn,t drag race id have a gen2 with a ti pipe, light wheels and rotors, light tank and upgraded suspension and radial mount master cylinder with a gen2 version of my current engine,Now that would be something else.Id probably need it to run in c mode until 3rd gear though to keep it down.Lol3

ermm guys all these performance advice is all well and good but Rod God bless his cotton socks aint one of those riders ie max performance. Hes a take it easy kinda rider, its more about the beautiful machine then the performance etc. we all know the bus is capable of alot and thats plenty for him........erm dare I say it a slow poke, but dont forget hes a new dad - he has to be.

He wants a new ride but questioning himself re lack of butterflies in the stomach. To that all I can say as we get older we no longer get as excited about new things as we did when we were in our 20's. Doesnt mean we dont love it when we get it, just the been there done that many times takes the butterfly effect out. So either way Rod go for one, youll still love the experience once its in your posession, even if ya do spend your time polishing and blinging it haha. Rod I knows ya.
