HID headlights

MY GOD, what a difference these things make! I rode home last night, playing deathrays with cars. NO-ONE wants to sit in front of you going slow in the fast lane, and everyone sees you coming. Even our security guards at work rushed out to see what the bright light was in the loading bay.

Here are a few photos showing how they were installed. Bruce, Simmo and Les were the brains behind this, and it appears to be a very elegant solution. Everything tucked away neatly.

If you think your headlight is good now, just wait until we get the correct high beam light and plug that in.

But then again, anything would have been better than that blackened low beam globe we removed.

that looked like a big job?? how long did it take from start to finish...as you had to take most of the fairing off by the look of it..Frown
I'd rather be riding my Hayabusa thinking about God than sitting in church thinking about my Hayabusa

All the fairing came off for other jobs that were being done at the same time.

By removing the nose cone, it allows you to mount the ballast boxes on the ram air ducts. One end the brackets that come with these has a longer tab with a couple of pre=drilled holes. You undo the hex head screw that holds the air duct to the nose cone/instrument cluster brackets and slide the tab between the duct and nose cone bracket. (middle photo) Then re fit the screw but don't tighten fully yet. You can do all this with the ballast box in the mounting bracket (cables at the bottom end).

Bend and rotate the ballast bracket to lay it flat against the air duct. In the bottom photo you can see how the ballast sit further forward at the bottom. You will find an angle where they sit flatter against the duct as you move the back and forward. Then fully tighten the screw that holds the ballast bracket.

At this point we fitted the nose cone back on to check clearances between the internal headlight fittings and the boxes then removed it again. We also turn the handle bars fully left and right to ensure that the steering damper did not make contact with the ballast. If it does, loosen the mounting screw and move the bottom end of the ballast further forward to you get clearance.

On the bottom of the ballast bracket you will notice a small tab with a pre-drilled hole. Holding the bracket firmly against the drill through this hole into the air duct. We then fitted a large headed screw and nut to fix the bottom edge of the bracket to the air duct. We used locktite as well. Then fit a long cable tie around the mounting bracket and ballast at the centre to provide further security. At the top edge of the mounting bracket you will notice a tab that is supposed to keep the ballast from moving about. We found we needed to bend this tab out and back so we could locate it firmly against the top end of the ballast.

Fit the globes while the nose cone is off. The fitting of the upper globe wiring is a bit fidley. You will need to pass the new loom through the dust/moisture boot. You will have 2 wires on the new loom that have spade connectors fitted. These plug into the black plug that you would have unplugged from the original globe. BLUE wire to the WHITE wire of this plug. Ensure the spade connectors fit firmly. You may need to close up the female connectors in the black plug a little to ensure a tight fit. Then as you refit the cone, plug all the connectors in, good idea to check at this point every thing works, and then fully refit the nose cone.

Once you've got every thing apart and start placing things in there you'll see where bits go. You can fit the ballast in other places with out having to remove the nose cone (which I have done), but this makes for a very secure, tidy set up and easy routing of the electrics.

I fitted a hi and Lo beam kit, but whereas the low beam is absolutely excellent, the hi beam is less so. What's the story here?
I understand that projector lamps are more sensitive to beam focus, so wondered if there was a better Hi beam globe available that will do the trick. Bought kit as being designed for hayabusa but that probably just means an h4 and an h1.

Dunno what's going on with your's Bear. my high beam is awesome. It just takes a couple of seconds to warm up. Out on the road at night The thing never gets cold enough to require warming up again, whereas in town it does. I wonder what is different on your setup to mine?

Maybe I should adjust the beam then. Don't ride it enough at night and high beam to warrant worrying about it. But sounds worthwhile. Mind you lo beam is fantastic. Just ordered 14 kits (H4s and H1s) for my daughters cars, my cars and the Austin 1800 Ute. Car kits are so cheap! Even the dual beam ones I can get delivered for just over $100!

Sounds like a trip to Canberra is on the cards with a HID kit & a bottle of Jack in the hump Lol3

i think it a job i'd pass on too....i'd want to throw something half way through that type of fiddlie job.

Can you upgrade the lowbeam's only or is it better to do both?

I rather like the flash lever on the K8, helped get my point across to an idiot who tried to fit between the bf's bike and me. Not Happy Jan!! I do try to keep the temper reined in. But don't try me around night time and coming down off a curvy range after a long days riding.

hmmmm maybe the blinding fury sounds like an excellent idea!

Hey guys thanks for the info - I have a kit I also bought from Glen but havnt fitted it yet and was wondering how th best way was going to be - I must say I am tempted to ride with that bottle of Jack that has been sitting in teh cupboard now for about 5years might be a good cause to donate too I think - a ride down to CBA on sat and back with new lights hmmm - so whats the total time required to drop fairings nose etc and fit just the HIDS you think?
