Mine only done 730kms so far but should be ready for 1,000km service early next week.

Not sure what fist service will cost but out of interest - I dropped the oil and replaced the filter at 200kms and it cost $133.00.

Why don't the bike companies do the first service free like cars?

they do, you have to ask for this when you buy your bike. ( before you decide on it at the dealer) :)
if you dont ask, they will not give it away.

I've been quoted $340 and about 3 1/2 hours work. Oil change, check tolerances, etc. I would like to know what was done in the service from those who have had it done, so I can question my dealer if it seems wrong.

I have to ask.

If they are doing all this at the first service, what are they doing on the Pre Delivery check?
Most of that stuff should be done before you ride it away in my opinion.

1st service should be no more than the oil and filter change and a once over of the bike to make sure there is nothing loose and all the globes are working.

I'm picking my K8 up this week and will quiz the dealer about PD AND 1st service.

This is what I got on the weekend for $192.10.

Oil and filter change and the once over, no mention on docket of cable adjustment or anything else.

That's all that's listed in the Owners manual, inspect a few things and change the oil.

Spoke to the mechanic when I picked it up and felt confident he had a good look over it, but didn't adjust anything.

I doubt anything on mine needed adjusting, it's going well enough to earn a 130 k ticket on the way home this arvo.

Man you need to find another dealer thats total BS.Pi_freak
Theres no tolerances that need to be checked at 1K,
oil, filter & check over thats it.
aBUSa & my self have had either free 1st services when we have bought new bikes or we did the oil & filter ourselves & were only charged $50 to have them check the bike & stamp the log book for the 1st couple of services.

I had my done for about $19 (USD).

That's what a new OEM filter and 4 quarts of Vavoline 10-40W cost me. All work I performed myself. No way in hell anyone is touching my bike but me.

That having been said.....

I was a little surprised how many things needed adjustment or tightening. I had to adjust the chain twice the first 500 miles! And there were a number of fasteners that needed to be torqued down a little (the most alarming was the lower bolt on the right caliper - ugh!). The two RPM ranges where significant vibes raise their ugly head (~4500-ish and 6500-ish RPM) seem to contribute to loosening up a number of fasteners.

Otherwise, the initial service is a piece of cake. Don't know how your dealers Down Under take to you all doing your own work, but as long as we retain all receipts for oil, filters, etc, doing our own servicing here doesn't affect any warranty claims whatsoever.
