had aquick look last night and there is a small amount f oil in the bottom f the airbox and seems to have ome from the breather hose and there is oil residue on the inide of all 4 trumpets. so im feeling abit optimistic now. will tear the airboxoff this weekend and give it a goo clean up and re route the oil breather hose possibly to a catch can.

mm, so a case of over filled oil ay.... but if that were the case you'd think a seal somewhere might have gone as well?

re the seal thats what assume there is a breather for or at least part of the reason. something must hve happened for the oil to come out the breather like that as it has enver done this before and i always do the same thing. will see if the breather was the only cause of the smoke this weekend i guess

If you have to route the breather to a catch can your overlooking that something is causing it to breath heavily enough to push oil out.
If its not just way overfull...and there is enough oil in the bike Start the bike, does the oil light go out? Are there any new noises ? (if the answers are not yes and no in that order turn it off;) ) Is it running smoothly on 4 cyls ? if not unclip the injector plugs one at a time and see which one doesn't make a difference.

idles smooth and makes no strange noises.oil light swiths off as soon as i start it. i didnt think it ws overful because like i saidi onlyput in 3.8 lites and i had let the bike drain completely put new oil filter on and drained out the oil cooler.

OK, here's the problem, too much oil coming out the breather. Put it into a catch can and the can fills up, problem not solved. There's something puishing air into the cases, and you need to find out what it is. A 4 cyl bike should not be pumping out much air at all, pistons go up and down in pairs at 180 degs to each other, net result no change in air volume in the cases. It's only for thermal expansion etc, plus a small amount of gas leakage pass the rings. It sounds like you have more than that. Pair system doesn't interact with the cases so that's out.....that leaves an internal leak and maybe back to the head gasket leaking, or a ring broken or ..... In any case, it's not normal, even you've not had the problem before, so I'd be looking at a compression test, or whip out plugs and see if you can get a scope into the pots looking for ring marks (not easy without a scope of course).
Drain the oil and check for metal is a good start too. There's got to be something and a small gasket leak will still let the bike run OK.
im not sure if its still pumping out oil as there was only oil residue there which i think may have been that it was over full and pumped out what it needed and that was it hopefully anyway.in terms of my catch can comment i didnt mean to use it as a easy fix but i dont like the idea that i might be dropping oil(if similiar happens again) anyhere near the wheels of my bike or for riders pontentially behind me. i thinkone of my mates up here has compression test equipment so ill get onto him about it. is it hard to do?

Not too hard, but maybe you're on the right track and it's pumped out what it's going to now.
Case of stripping to pull spark plugs out and then sticking press guage in the hole and crank it over. Manual has specs.

sweet. well ill see how it goes saturday. is there any fuel treatment i can use that will help clean out the intake an fuel system now that its coated in oil residue. im guessing the head might be choked up a bit with it so is there anything that i can add to clean it or jsut run it and eventually will clean up?

We have a bike shop over here called RILUSI.
The guys name is Aaron and I kept wondering how he got his shop name. Seems they wouldn't register his preferred name which was "Ride It Like You Stole It" so he registered RILUSI and they didn't twig! Good shop, specialises in sports, bling, drag racing, more bling, show bikes, bling, racing and ..... anything but normal stuff.!
