Any experts or experience on Red light laws?

My son got a red light violation. We ordered pics, theyre to lousy to reproduce here, very dark at night.

The first pic shows car rear wheels past stop line by about 2 meteres with elapsed time on red 1.0 seconds. Second pic shows car turning left at intersection, cars rear barely shown at 1.8 seconds.

I always thought front wheels have to be before stop line on red then second pic showing car proceeding through intersection. Perhaps if pic shows rear wheels before stop line on red may be questionable but as above rear wheels past line by say 2 meteres doesnt look to me as a violation.

Also considering since a left turn was being made the car didnt speed through the intersection but at a crawl proceeding to turn.

Any experts on the matter? am considering contesting this in court.

In NSW, once they go amber, you are required to stop if it is safe to do so.

If there is no vehicle stopped at the lights behind your son, you won't be able to use that excuse.
Don't know about Victoria but I would imagine they are the same.

My understanding, Volvi, is that the first photo will show that you have already violated the red (the sensor is past the line, and you will have broken that sensor - if it is red light only, then that only happens if the light is red, not preemptive). I see why you have a dilemma - he could, for instance, have been waiting for a pedestrian who ran across late (as he was turning left) and already had the front of the car in the intersection and was accelerating out when it went red. By the sounds of it, you have a potential case, as what you described does not rule out a situation like that.
