I was saddened today to have to attend a funeral of a real mate.
I avoid funerals like the plague but there was no where else that I would rather have been today.
You see my mate and I met when we were about 8 years old and stayed like brothers until we were about 20. Together with another buddy, we all lived within a few hundred metres of each other and we were inseparable.
We went to school, camped, fished, rode our pushies, played soccer and cricket together and even chased the same chicks every day of our young lives.
Every time something noteworthy in our lives happened, the three of us were together. Right up till the three weddings.
Unfortunately as life takes its turns, we lost touch when I left home to join the Air Force and he went off to Uni a little later.
I am sad and ashamed to say that I had not taken the time to catch up with him over the past 22 years, even though we once again lived in the same city for the past 10. It is too late to do so now but I will carry our formative years with me forever.
He passed away without warning after not having the proverbial sick day in his life (apart from sporting injuries and snake bites) on Friday morning. He was sitting on his bed writing a note. The pen dropped on the floor and he dropped onto his back. Forever at rest.
