Erratic Idle?

Anyone had this problem?
Yesterday i went for a ride and when i pulled up the bus was reving its head off at idle(was idling at 1500rpm).I wound the idle adjustment down to 1100rpm and then seemed to be fine.
I'm just wondering why the idle speed all of a sudden went up as the bike had not been touched????? <i></i>
