Gen 1 external fuel pump cover

Hi I am going to rebuild my fuel pump. I destroyed the foam type cover.Is it essential ? I assume it is a heat thing.

nah my foam was destroyed yrs ago wont come off like a sock and yea for heat. rebuilt my pump a few times. tip change those pesky philips screws to hex head or flat screwdriver heads, easier to open and close. when rebuilding mine i had a spare pump for parts and there was slight variations between say a '99 and 2001 pump, surprised me. (i think it was '01)
