Slip-on's and the cat ...

Just looking at fitting my slip-ons and on removing the stock exhaust I notice there is what appears to be thick silver sealant that the stockies mounted over. Looking at my slip-ons there is no way they will go over this sealant but they will obviously go over the inch or so of straight pipe that doesn't have sealant.

Just wondering - do I remove the sealant and push the slip-ons 'further on' or just bolt them up firm against where the sealant ends?

If you can't push it up over the sealant, I'd be removing it. Check once fitted, but your slip-ons should seal sufficiently without applying new exhaust sealant. Don't worry about the cat. It's in the collector, so replacing your mufflers with slip-ons doesn't lose the cat.

Autobarn/supercheap etc. will sell the sealant if needed.

Did just that. The Yoshi slip-on's wont even go close to going over the sealant/gasket - they are a very snug (good) fit on the pipe out of the cat. I looked at it and without removing the sealant, the pipes lost about an inch of purchase on the stock cat pipe, and looking from the top it seemed as though that kicked out the front of the cans a little - so I removed the sealant and it looks fine now.

I looked on a number of sites and a few youtube vids, seems people sometimes do leave the sealant/gasket on. I guess it kinda looks like it doesn't 'just come off', but it doesn't leave much to clamp onto and doesn't look 'quite right'.

So now for the embarrassing part, "Installation Step 1" reads:
"Remove stock mufflers, stock tailpipes and stock exhaust gaskets NOTE: Stock exhaust gaskets will not be used between the stock header and the Yoshimura tailpipes".

I hope someone gets a laugh out of that Hopefully the next guy asking that question who is too excited about his new exhaust to read the instructions properly will find this thread.

As slip-ons go - very happy with the weight saving, the sound, the smaller profile, the looks and the 1.21 horsepower I picked up - nice cans ....
